About Art

Beautiful artwork can provide the finishing touch to your home or office decor.  And, beautifully custom framed artwork presents a personal expression of your taste and style.

GETTING SMARTER ABOUT ART

As you shop for art, you'll hear and see a number of terms that not only describe the art, but also the printing process.  Here's a quick and easy guide to help you get smarter about art:

LIMITED EDITION:  With limited edition artwork, only a predetermined number of prints of the original will ever be created.  The edition size is fixed prior to printing; once an edition has sold out, no more will ever be made.

GICLEE (ZHEE-CLAY):  The Giclee process is the closest possible reproduction of original artwork afforded by technology.  This is a specialized ink spray process where the image is transferred onto archival paper or canvas.  It is unmatched in its exquisite color and razor-sharp details, and has quickly become a new print standard for museums, galleries, publishers, and artists.

LITHOGRAPH:  In creating a lithograph, an image is drawn by the artist onto a metal plate with an oil-based crayon.  The plate is then rinsed in water, and the image repels the water while attracting special lithograph inks that are applied with a roller.  The inked image is then transferred onto paper, creating a rich, deeply saturated quality in the artwork.

SERIGRAPH:  (silkscreen)  A serigraph print is created by pressing inks through finely woven screens.  Each color in the final work has a unique and separate screen associated with it or is created by layering multiple inks to achieve an exact color.

INTAGLIO (IN-TAHL-EE-O):  This is the overall printing category for etchings and engravings, whereby an image is carved or acid-etched into a plate, which is then hand-inked and transferred to a paper using a press.  A visual characteristic of intaglios is the plate mark that remains impressed into the paper after printing.
